Nelson hosts youth exchange

Posted: May 31 - 2010

Nelson’s two Rotary clubs recently hosted the world, or so it seemed, when 29 Rotary Youth Exchange students arrived in the city as part of their Rotary District 5080 tour. The kids thoroughly enjoyed a visit to Ainsworth Hot Springs, a BBQ at Rotary Lakeside Park, a hike along the Burlington Northern Trail, and a walk down historic Baker Street.

The personalized tour of the Nelson Tramway given by Rotarian Walter Laurie was a highlight and it must have been some time since Walter was in such high demand by a bevy of females wanting to have their picture taken with him. The D5080 Tour, which takes the students to Grand Forks, Castlegar, Nelson, Spokane, Liberty Lake, Orofino, Clarkston, Walla Walla and Richland, is a highlight of the year for the students who ar- rived in North America in August 2009. They will soon be heading home to distant lands such as Italy and other parts of Europe, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, and Australia.
